How to Bake With Almond Meal (3 Steps)

Almond flour is a common ingredient in recipes for people with gluten allergies or who are following a low carbohydrate diet. While almond flour has some differences with wheat flour, almond flour can be used in virtually any kind of baked good.

Things You'll Need

  • Almond flour
  • Baking tools
  • Recipe ingredients

Obtaining and Using Almond Flour

  1. Choose an unblanched almond flour. According to the experienced cook and writer of Comfy Belly.com, unblanched almond flour is best. Because so many people have gluten allergies, most grocery stores now carry almond flour. Alternatively, you can make your own by grinding almonds in a blender, a half-cup at a time, and sifting the resulting flour.

  2. Find a recipe, such as one from Elana Amsterdam's book, The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook. Almond flour has different properties than wheat flour, and therefore cannot simply be substituted for wheat flour in a recipe.

  3. Prepare the baked good according to the recipe. Store leftover almond flour in a mason jar to keep it fresh. If you plan to bake again soon, store it in the pantry. If not, then storing it in the freezer will extend the shelf life.
