How to Brown & Serve Homemade Rolls (6 Steps)

Brown and serve rolls have been a dinner classic in American homes for decades. These quick-cooking small breads have traditionally come in a white version, and in the past decade have featured a whole wheat flavor as well. Bake up a batch of your own bread flavor into rolls and you can enjoy them fresh out of the oven for dinner any night you like.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 batch yeast bread dough
  • Muffin pan
  • Cooking spray
  • Kitchen towel
  • Oven
  • Oven mitts or hot pads
  • Zip top bags
  • Baking sheets

Instructions

  1. Place the bread dough in a warm place until it rises the correct amount for regular baking.

  2. Spray the inside cups of muffin pans with cooking spray. Get the spray on the bottoms as well as the sides of the cups.

  3. Pull off pieces of dough about the size of a walnut. Roll each piece of dough into a ball and drop it into a cup in the muffin pan. Drop three balls into each cup. Cover the muffin pans with a kitchen towel and set them aside to allow the dough to rise for an additional half an hour.

  4. Place pans into a preheated oven that has been set at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the rolls to cook for eight minutes or until the dough is set. Remove the pans from the oven. Dump out the rolls onto a kitchen towel and allow them to cool. They will be white in color and look undone.

  5. Package the rolls in zip top bags. If you will use them within a week, keep them in the refrigerator until baked. If you are going to wait longer than a week, put the bags into the freezer until needed.

  6. Pull out frozen bags of rolls and allow them to thaw at room temperature when you are ready to bake them. Arrange thawed rolls onto a baking sheet and bake in a 425 degree oven for five to eight minutes, or until golden brown.
