How to Make an Icing Leaf (6 Steps)

Cake decoration is an elaborate art that can create beautiful desserts. Learning the techniques and tricks of icing decoration can be frustrating but is well worth the practice and effort. The most common icing decorations are flowers and leaves, and if you put the time into practice then you'll be creating cake art like the pros.

Things You'll Need

  • Green frosting
  • Piping bag
  • Icing tip No. 67

Basic Flat Leaf

  1. Insert the icing tip into the piping bag. Then fill the bag with green frosting.

  2. Hold the bag at a 45-degree angle to the top of the cake, with the end of the bag pointing to the right-hand side.

  3. Squeeze the bag firmly to make the base of the leaf. Pull the tube away from the base as you release pressure and bring the leaf to a point. Stop pressure and bring the piping bag straight up and away from the cake.

Basic Standing Leaf

  1. Create a stand up leaf by starting with the icing tip at a 45-degree angle to the top of the cake and the end of the bag pointing toward yourself.

  2. Squeeze the bag firmly for the base of the leaf. Then pull the bag straight up and away from the top of the cake as you release pressure on the bag.

  3. Draw the leaf to a point and stop all pressure on the bag. If the leave does not stand up then your frosting is too thin. Adding powdered sugar to your mixture will help thicken the frosting.
