How to Cut Angel Food Cake

Made with a large amount of egg whites, angel food cake is a light airy cake that pairs well with coffee and tea. Angel food cake was first created in Pennsylvania in the early 1800s, which is why it also sometimes called Pennsylvania Dutch wedding cake. Its unique light texture does tend to squish, however, if not properly cut. Learn how to cut angel food cake without squishing or crumbling your slice.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic container
  • Long, serrated knife
  • Wire rack
  • Cutting board

Instructions

  1. Seal the angel food cake in a plastic container and place it inside the freezer. Allow the cake to freeze for 1 to 2 hours. Freezing increases the cake's firmness and helps to keep it from crumbling during cutting.

  2. Take the angel food cake out of the container and defrost it on a wire rack for 5 to 10 minutes.

  3. Place the angel food cake on a cutting board and cut it with a long, serrated knife using slow, saw-like motions. Let the knife's teeth do the cutting for you; don't press hard on the knife as you cut.

  4. Serve 2-inch slices of cake with coffee or tea.
