Can I Substitute Margarine for Shortening in Cake Recipes?
It can be incredibly annoying when you are baking a cake and discover in the middle of the process that you do not have all the necessary ingredients. Luckily, you can often substitute another ingredient you have on hand and end up with almost identical results. If you are baking a cake that calls for shortening and you can't find any in your cabinet, margarine makes a good substitute. The trick when substituting one ingredient for another is knowing the proper amount to use.
Things You'll Need
- Margarine
Instructions
-
Look at your cake recipe to find how much shortening is needed.
-
Measure out the same amount of margarine. Margarine substitutes for shortening in equal quantities. For example, if the cake recipe calls for 1 cup of shortening, substitute 1 cup of margarine.
-
Allow the margarine to come to room temperature before adding it to your cake batter. Softened margarine blends with the rest of the ingredients more easily.
