What happens if you use out dated baking powder in a recipe?

Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps baked goods rise. It is a mixture of baking soda, an acid, and a drying agent. When baking powder is mixed with water, the acid reacts with the baking soda to produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas causes the baked goods to rise.

If you use baking powder that is out of date, it may not react as well with the water and baking soda. This can cause the baked goods to be dense and heavy. In some cases, out-of-date baking powder can also give baked goods a bitter taste.

If you are unsure whether or not baking powder is still good, you can test it. To do this, mix 1 teaspoon of baking powder with 1/2 cup of hot water. If the mixture bubbles, the baking powder is still good. If it does not bubble, the baking powder is out of date and should be discarded.

Note: This can also have an impact on cake recipes too in addition to other baked item recipes.
