How do you make marshmallows?
To make marshmallows, you'll need the following ingredients:
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup light corn syrup
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
Instructions:
1. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened and reached a temperature of 240°F (115°C) on a candy thermometer.
2. In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
3. With the mixer running, slowly add the hot sugar syrup to the egg whites. Beat until the mixture is glossy and stiff peaks form again.
4. Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.
5. In a large bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and cornstarch.
6. Pour the marshmallow mixture into the bowl with the powdered sugar and cornstarch. Fold the mixture together until it comes together and forms a dough.
7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly powdered surface and knead until smooth.
8. Cut the dough into 1-inch pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
9. Place the marshmallows on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
10. Let the marshmallows dry at room temperature for several hours or overnight before enjoying.
Tips:
- To make the marshmallows more flavorful, you can add different flavorings such as peppermint extract, lemon extract, or cocoa powder.
- To make the marshmallows gooier, you can add a little more corn syrup.
- To make the marshmallows firmer, you can add a little more powdered sugar.
