How to Bake Chicken in Sauce (5 Steps)

Baking chicken in sauce is an easy and flavorful way to cook dinner at the end of a long day. Depending on the sauce you choose, it can also be healthier than cooking on the stove or deep-frying because baking uses less fat. Choose a pesto, teriyaki, Alfredo or tomato sauce; the method is the same, so just change the sauce to suit your mood. Boneless chicken breasts with and without skin work equally well in this preparation.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • Plastic wrap
  • Small skillet
  • Baking dish
  • Olive oil
  • Your favorite sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the chicken breasts between two pieces of plastic wrap. Smooth any air bubbles out toward the edges.

  2. Pound the chicken breasts flat with a small skillet. Aim for uniform thickness rather than any specific measurement. Flattening the chicken allows it to bake evenly and prevents dry, overcooked edges and a raw, pink interior.

  3. Rub olive oil lightly all over the interior of a baking dish. Place the pounded chicken breasts in the dish. It's OK if the chicken breasts touch slightly, but overlap them as little as possible.

  4. Pour your favorite sauce over the chicken breasts. Spread out the sauce so that it covers the chicken evenly. This will help keep the chicken moist as it bakes.

  5. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and no pink remains. Serve immediately over pasta, rice, or vegetables.
