How to Trace Pictures on a Cake

Cake decorating is an art, but there are times when you need to draw a character or particular image that you cannot freehand well. Rather than try to freehand it, you can trace an image and place it on a cake to have a flawless finish that looks like you freehanded it. Try to use images that are wide set and do not have a lot of small details, especially for your first try at tracing.

Things You'll Need

  • Parchment paper
  • Piping gel
  • Decorator bag
  • Decorating tip #1
  • Frosted cake
  • Food safe marker
  • Printed image

Instructions

  1. Fill a pastry bag with clear piping gel. Place a freshly frosted cake in the fridge or freezer to harden the buttercream.

  2. Lay a piece of parchment paper over a printed image off the computer or from a book. Use a food safe marker to trace the outline of the image.

  3. Turn the parchment paper over. Use your pastry bag to trace over the image on the opposite side of the paper.

  4. Remove the cake from the refrigerator. Turn the parchment paper over and center it over the cake. Carefully lay the paper down with the piping gel facing down on top of the cake. Do not press or smooth the piping gel or it will smear. Lift the parchment paper straight up from the cake.

  5. Use royal icing or buttercream to outline the piping gel areas on the cake. Fill in the outline with different colored frostings and allow it time to dry before serving.
