How Do I Measure Pie Plates? (4 Steps)

Pie recipes call for specific pie plate sizes because the filling needs room to expand while cooking, and it must fill enough of the pie plate to look like a well-made pie. If you have several unmarked pie plates in your cupboard, figure out what sizes they are before blindly pouring anything into them. Using a different size of pie plate than called for in the recipe can also change the cooking time, possibly resulting in a burned or soggy pie.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Strip of paper
  • Water
  • Wide-mouth funnel
  • Large, clear, liquid measuring cup

Instructions

  1. Place the ruler or measuring tape on top of the rim of the pie plate. If you can fit the entire ruler or tape inside the pie plate, hold it so that the ends touch the inside of the top rim.

  2. Read the ruler from top inside edge to top inside edge. This gives you the basic measurement that you need for recipes, such as 9 inches across.

  3. Lay the strip of paper across the top of the plate, and place the edge of the ruler at the bottom center of the plate. Hold the ruler straight up and against the paper. Note the measurement at which they cross. This tells you the height and whether the pie plate is considered deep-dish or not. Deep-dish pie plates are 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches deep.

  4. Pour water into the pan up to the rim to determine how much volume the pan holds. Place the funnel in the measuring cup. Pour the water into the mouth of the funnel. Note the measurement on the side of the measuring cup; if you reach the top measurement and still have water left in the pie pan, note the first measurement, pour out the water, pour the remaining water from the pie dish into the cup, and add the two measurements. This gives you the volume of the pie dish, which is necessary when substituting pans. Alternatively, pour a pre-measured amount of liquid into the pie plate instead to note volume.
