Why are some chicks hatched with their yolk sac stil attached?

It is normal for some chicks to hatch with their yolk sacs still attached. This occurs when the chick has not completely absorbed the yolk sac before emerging from the egg. The yolk sac provides nutrients to the chick during development and is usually absorbed into the chick's body before hatching.

When a chick hatches with its yolk sac still attached, it is called an "unabsorbed yolk sac." This condition is usually not harmful and will resolve itself within a few days as the chick continues to absorb the remaining yolk. However, in some cases, an unabsorbed yolk sac can cause problems such as infection or dehydration.

If you notice that a chick has hatched with its yolk sac still attached, you can gently move the yolk sac back into the chick's body. To do this, use your finger to gently push the yolk sac into the chick's abdomen. You can also place the chick in a warm, humid environment to help the yolk sac absorb more quickly.

If the yolk sac does not absorb within a few days or if the chick shows signs of illness, you should take the chick to a veterinarian for further evaluation.
