Why does salt water make you sick?
Salt water itself does not make you sick.
However, drinking large amounts of salt water can lead to a condition called *hypernatremia*, which occurs when the sodium level in your blood becomes too high. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Confusion
- Seizures
- Coma
In severe cases, hypernatremia can be fatal.
The reason why salt water can cause hypernatremia is because the kidneys are not able to filter out the excess sodium. This is because sodium is an essential electrolyte that the body needs to function properly. When the sodium level in the blood becomes too high, the kidneys are not able to keep up with the demand and the sodium builds up in the blood.
