How to Make Marshmallow Cereal Bars (6 Steps)

Even the most inexperienced cook or baker likely has memories of making marshmallow cereal bars, or at the very least, of savoring each gooey bite. The classic treat is made with crispy rice cereal, but you can substitute any cereal. Even healthy cereals can be used, although the melted butter and marshmallows that bind the cereal in bar form will raise the calorie count. Try these easy treats as an alternative to store-bought cereal bars.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking dish
  • Butter
  • Baking spray
  • Sauce pan
  • Marshmallows
  • Cereal
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Knife
  • Cookie cutters (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease the bottom and sides of a baking pan with butter or non-stick baking spray to prevent the marshmallow bars from sticking.

  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Adjust the amount of butter to suit your taste, but a standard 10-ounce bag of marshmallows typically requires 3 to 4 tablespoons of butter.

  3. Stir in the marshmallows and continue stirring constantly until they melt completely. Remove the pan from the heat.

  4. Fold your choice of cereal into the melted marshmallow mixture until thoroughly combined. For a 10-ounce bag of marshmallows, add 4 to 6 cups of cereal. The amount of cereal needed depends on whether you prefer gooey or drier marshmallow bars.

  5. Transfer the cereal mixture to the baking dish. Spray a spoon or spatula with baking spray or coat it with butter to prevent sticking. Spread the mixture evenly across the dish and press down firmly to ensure the cereal sticks together tightly.

  6. Cut even rows to make square or rectangular bar shapes.
