Pita Bread Sandwich Ideas

Pita is a kind of Middle Eastern bread that can be used to make different kinds of sandwiches. This round bread, when sliced in half, provides "pockets" that you can stuff your favorite ingredients into. Make a light meal or a snack using pita bread, which, like other breads, comes in different varieties like whole wheat and white. Try using pita bread as an alternative to your regular loaf.

Cheesy Pita Bread Sandwich

  • Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will enjoy eating a pita bread sandwich loaded with cheese. Cut a pita in half and spread the inside of the pita bread with tomato sauce or mashed avocado. Fill the pita with vegetables like sliced olives, chopped or sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, chopped basil leaves and even some jalapenos. Add grated cheddar cheese or a combination of different cheeses.

Mediterranean Beef or Chicken Pita Sandwich

  • For a beef or chicken pita sandwich, cook ribeye steak or chicken breast seasoned with basil, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper in a skillet for about 12 to 15 minutes. Slice the cooked meat into strips and stuff it into the pita bread. For a Mediterranean take on the sandwich, add crumbled feta cheese and sliced olives and top it with hummus or a mixture of lemon juice, olive oil and vinegar. Add chopped or sliced onions, tomatoes and lettuce to the pita sandwich.

Salmon Pita Sandwich

  • Make a salmon pita sandwich by seasoning a salmon fillet with salt and pepper, then cooking it in a pan with olive oil. Line the inside of the pita bread with creamy dill sauce or with a combination of mayonnaise and sour cream. Break the cooked salmon into chunks and stuff it into the pita; add lettuce, slices of tomato, a finely-chopped hard-boiled egg, finely chopped onions and capers. As an alternative, replace the cooked salmon with lox or smoked salmon and spread the bread with cream cheese.
