How do you position your silverware if are taking a rest from eating?
There are a couple of common ways to position your silverware when taking a break from eating, and they both signal to your server that you're not finished:
The "8 O'Clock" Position:
* Forks: Lay the fork across the top of the plate with the tines facing upwards and the handle pointing to the right.
* Knives: Lay the knife across the top of the plate with the blade facing inwards and the handle pointing to the left.
The "4 O'Clock" Position:
* Forks: Place the fork on the plate with the tines facing downwards and the handle pointing to the right.
* Knives: Place the knife on the plate with the blade facing inwards and the handle pointing to the left.
The "Closed" Position:
* If you've finished your meal, you can position your fork and knife parallel to each other, pointing to the right, like a closed book.
Important Notes:
* These positions are generally used in Western dining etiquette.
* If you're unsure about the local customs, it's always best to observe how others are doing it or politely ask your host or server.
Let me know if you have any other questions about dining etiquette!
