How small are the holes on surface of Mentos that react with coke?

Mentos candies do not have any holes on their surface. The reaction between Mentos and Diet Coke is caused by the nucleation sites on the surface of the candy. These sites provide a surface for the carbon dioxide bubbles to form and grow, which leads to the eruption of the soda.
