How to Make Peppered Gravy (5 Steps)

If you're making fried chicken, roast turkey or beef, or any delicious meat main dish, some peppered gravy will finish it off in fine style. However, you can also make peppered gravy without meat and serve it hot over toast or flaky biscuits.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tbsp. heavy cream
  • 1 tsp. cayenne
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly cracked black peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan.

  2. Add the flour, salt, cayenne and ground peppercorns and sauté the mixture until the flour is beginning to turn brown.

  3. Take the saucepan off the heat and pour the milk in gradually, stirring as you pour.

  4. Put the saucepan back on the burner and bring it to a boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. If the peppered gravy is too thick, add a bit more milk.

  5. Whisk in the heavy cream and keep the peppered gravy on low heat until you're ready to serve it.
