How are corn thins made?
1. Milling the Corn
Corn thins start as whole corn kernels. These kernels are milled into a fine meal, which is the base ingredient for the chips.
2. Adding Water and Salt
The cornmeal is then mixed with water and salt to form a dough. The amount of water and salt added is carefully controlled to ensure the chips have the right texture and flavor.
3. Cooking
The dough is then cooked by passing it through a heated extruder. The extruder heats the dough and forces it through a die, which shapes it into thin sheets. As the sheets of dough exit the extruder, they are cut into individual chips.
4. Drying
The chips are then dried in a oven to remove any remaining moisture. This step is important to ensure the chips are crispy and shelf-stable.
5. Seasoning
After the chips are dry, they are seasoned with a variety of flavors. Some common flavors include salt and vinegar, barbecue, and cheese. The chips are then packaged and sold to consumers.
