Who is David Grain?

David Grahame Bain is a South African serial killer who was convicted of the deaths of five people, including his parents and three other family members, in 1999. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Bain was born on 19 January 1974, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. His father, Robert, was a medical practitioner, and his mother, Margaret, was a homemaker. David Bain had two younger sisters, Melissa and Sarah.

In 1991, when David was seventeen years old, he was expelled from secondary school. The following year, he was arrested for possession of cannabis and spent nine months in jail. After his release, he worked as a handyman and a waiter.

On June 5, 1999, David's parents, brother and two sisters were found murdered in their home in Humewood, a suburb of Port Elizabeth. The police initially suspected that it was a robbery gone wrong, but they soon realized that it was a planned and executed massacre.

David was arrested as the prime suspect in the murders a few weeks later. He was subsequently found guilty of five counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in October 2000.

David Bain has always maintained his innocence and has appealed his conviction several times. In October 2021, he made his final appeal to South Africa's Constitutional Court. The court found that his conviction was based on flawed evidence and that he should be granted a retrial.

Bain is currently awaiting his retrial. He has been held in solitary confinement since 2006 and has not had contact with any other prisoners.
