Where do potatoes come from in the UK?

The potato was first brought to the United Kingdom from South America in the 16th century, and was grown in Ireland by 1588. However, it was not until the 18th century that the potato became a major crop in the UK. This was due in part to the efforts of the Royal Dublin Society, which promoted the cultivation of potatoes as a way to reduce dependence on imported food. By the end of the 18th century, potatoes had become a staple food in many parts of the UK. Today, potatoes are grown throughout the UK, with the majority of production taking place in the eastern and southern regions of England.
