Why do blocks of cheese have shiny outsides?
The shiny outside of a block of cheese is typically caused by wax or plastic coating.
Here's why this is done:
* Protection: The coating helps to protect the cheese from moisture loss, mold growth, and other environmental factors that can damage the cheese.
* Preservation: The coating creates a barrier, preventing oxidation and extending the cheese's shelf life.
* Appearance: The shiny coating can also add to the cheese's visual appeal, making it more desirable for consumers.
Different types of cheese coatings:
* Wax: A traditional and common coating, usually made from paraffin wax. It's relatively easy to apply and remove.
* Plastic: More modern coatings like PVC or polyethylene offer better protection but can be more difficult to remove.
Some cheeses, however, don't have a shiny coating at all. These cheeses are often sold in smaller portions or have a shorter shelf life. They may be wrapped in paper or film to protect them.
