Chocolate originated in Mesoamerica, the cultural region including modern-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. The earliest evidence of chocolate consumption dates back to the 19th century BC, when the Olmec civilization used it in rituals. The Maya and Aztec civilizations also used chocolate as a ceremonial drink, and as currency.
