What was food like in the civil war?

Food during the Civil War was often scarce, and of poor quality. Soldiers on both sides of the conflict were often forced to live off the land, foraging for whatever food they could find. This often meant eating whatever they could find, including:

- Cornmeal mush

- Hardtack (a type of hard biscuit)

- Pork

- Beef

- Beans

- Dried fruit

- Molasses

Fresh vegetables and fruit were often difficult to come by, and soldiers were often forced to go long periods of time without them. This could lead to malnutrition and disease.

In addition to the scarcity of food, soldiers were also often forced to eat their food in unsanitary conditions. This could lead to the spread of disease, such as typhoid fever and dysentery.

Despite the hardships, many soldiers managed to survive the Civil War. However, the war left a lasting impact on the health of many of the survivors.
