What does the northern snakehead eat?

Northern snakeheads are voracious predators and opportunistic feeders, consuming a wide variety of prey including fish, crustaceans, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and even small birds and mammals. They primarily hunt by ambushing their prey from cover and have been known to attack prey much larger than themselves. Fish species commonly consumed by northern snakeheads include sunfish, bass, minnows, catfish, and suckers. They also feed on crayfish, shrimp, and other crustaceans. Insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and dragonflies are also part of their diet. Northern snakeheads will not hesitate to consume amphibians like frogs and salamanders, as well as reptiles such as snakes and turtles. In cases where smaller birds or mammals come within reach, they too may be preyed upon.
