How to Eat Tortillas
The tortilla was originally known as "tlaxcalli" by Nahuatl-speaking Central American natives, but the Spanish Conquistadors changed the name of the natives' flat corn breads to tortillas, according to online food magazine The Nibble. The new name was the same as Spanish flat cakes, which resembled tlaxcalli. Today, people all over the world still eat tortillas made with cornmeal, and they're also made with flour. Both varieties offer a wide range of meal and snack options depending on your personal tastes.
Things You'll Need
- Corn and/or flour tortillas
- Tea towel
- Microwave-safe bowl with lid
- Fillings or toppings
- Butter
- Oil
- Salt
- Salsa
Instructions
-
Prepare tortillas for eating by wrapping a dozen corn or flour tortillas in a damp tea towel and placing the bundle in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover the bowl and microwave on medium power for two to three minutes or until the tortillas are warm and pliable.
-
Use flour or corn tortillas as a substitute for bread by putting the filling on one side of a tortilla and rolling the tortilla into a cylinder. Hold one of the open ends closed while you eat the tortilla wrap to keep the fillings inside.
-
Make a quesadilla. Put shredded cheese between two flour tortillas and grill or pan-fry it on both sides until the cheese melts. You can also add other ingredients, such as vegetables or cooked meat.
-
Brush warmed corn or flour tortillas with butter and eat as you would a warm piece of bread. Sprinkle salt or cinnamon and sugar over the butter for additional flavor.
-
Deep-fry whole or sliced corn or flour tortillas in hot oil for one minute or until golden. Let them drain on paper towels, sprinkle with salt, and serve hot with a side of salsa for homemade tortilla chips and dip.
