What are the five food groups?

There are actually more than five food groups! The most common way to categorize foods is with the MyPlate guidelines, which focus on these five food groups:

1. Fruits: Apples, bananas, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, etc.

2. Vegetables: Broccoli, carrots, spinach, potatoes, onions, etc.

3. Grains: Bread, cereal, rice, pasta, etc. (Choose whole grains whenever possible!)

4. Protein Foods: Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds, etc.

5. Dairy: Milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. (Choose low-fat or fat-free options whenever possible!)

It's important to note that these groups are not meant to be followed in isolation. A healthy diet is one that combines all of these food groups in balanced proportions.
