Where do Chinese paddlefish live?

Chinese paddlefish, also known as the Chinese swordfish, are a critically endangered species of anadromous fish that was endemic to the Yangtze River in China. They were once found in large numbers in the Yangtze River basin and its major tributaries, but their population declined rapidly in the latter half of the 20th century due to overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. In 2003, the Chinese paddlefish was declared functionally extinct, meaning that there were no longer any known living members of the species. However, in 2022, a team of scientists announced that they had captured a single female Chinese paddlefish in the Yangtze River, giving hope that the species may not be completely extinct after all.
