How much dry rice for 1 lb of cooked rice?
You will need approximately 1/2 lb (~227 grams) of dry rice to cook 1 pound/~454 grams of cooked rice. For example, if your rice cooker or recipe calls for 2 cups of cooked rice, you will use about 1 cup of dry rice.
To cook 1 pound of dry rice, follow these steps:
- Measure the desired quantity of dry rice into a strainer.
- Rinse the rice thoroughly in cool running water until the water runs clear. This will remove starch from the surface of the rice and prevent it from becoming sticky once cooked.
- Drain the rice and let it sit in the strainer for a few minutes to allow excess water to drain off.
- In a medium saucepan or rice cooker, add the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water (for each cup of dry rice), and a pinch of salt (if desired).
- Cover the pot or rice cooker and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until all of the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Remove the pot or rice cooker from the heat and let it sit for an additional 5 minutes, covered, before fluffing with a fork and serving.
