What is the origin of okra?

The okra plant (Abelmoschus esculentus) is believed to have originated in the Ethiopian highlands, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. It was introduced to other parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East by traders and explorers, and eventually made its way to the Americas during the transatlantic slave trade. Okra is now grown in tropical and subtropical regions around the world and is a popular ingredient in many cuisines, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.
