Where should basil be stored?
Fresh basil leaves can be stored in a variety of ways, depending on the length of time you want to keep them:
1. Room Temperature: For short-term storage (up to a few days), place basil leaves in a glass or jar filled with about an inch of water. Cover the container loosely with plastic wrap or a lid and keep it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Replace the water every day to keep it fresh.
2. Refrigerator: For longer storage (up to 1 week), wash the basil leaves and pat them dry. Wrap the dry basil leaves in a paper towel or clean kitchen cloth, place them in a plastic bag or airtight container, and store in the refrigerator's vegetable drawer. Avoid storing basil near fruits that produce ethylene gas, such as apples and bananas, as this can cause it to wilt and spoil faster.
3. Freezing: For long-term storage (up to several months), freezing basil leaves is a great option. Wash and pat the basil leaves dry. Blanch them by dipping them in boiling water for 10-15 seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice-cold water bath to stop the cooking process. Drain the blanched basil leaves and pat them dry. Spread the basil leaves on a baking sheet and freeze them for about 2 hours, or until solid. Transfer the frozen basil leaves to labeled freezer-safe bags or containers, squeezing out as much air as possible. Store in the freezer for up to several months.
4. Drying: Drying basil is another way to preserve it for an extended period. Tie small bunches of basil leaves together with kitchen twine and hang them in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Alternatively, you can spread basil leaves in a single layer on a baking sheet and place them in a low-temperature oven (around 180-200°F) with the door slightly cracked open. Bake for 2-3 hours or until the leaves are crispy and dry. Crumble the dried basil leaves and store them in airtight containers in a cool, dark place.
By following these storage methods, you can extend the freshness and flavor of basil and enjoy it for a longer period of time.
