Do lobsters need to live in salt water?
Lobsters are a type of crustacean, and like all crustaceans, they need salt water to survive. Their gills are adapted to extract oxygen from salt water, and their bodies are designed to maintain a certain level of salinity. If a lobster is placed in fresh water, it will quickly die.
However, there are some species of lobster that can tolerate lower levels of salinity for short periods of time. These species can be found in brackish water estuaries, where the salt water from the ocean mixes with fresh water from rivers. However, they cannot survive in fresh water for long.
So, while lobsters need salt water to survive, they can tolerate lower levels of salinity for short periods of time.
