How can you tell the different between crawfish from shrimp?

Crawfish (also called crayfish or mudbugs) and shrimp are both crustaceans, but there are some key differences between the two.

Size

Crawfish are typically larger than shrimp, with some species growing up to 12 inches long. Shrimp, on the other hand, are usually much smaller, with most species measuring between 1 and 3 inches long.

Body Shape

Crawfish have a long, cylindrical body with a hard shell. Their tail is long and narrow, and they have two large claws on their front legs. Shrimp have a more compressed body with a softer shell. Their tail is fan-shaped, and they have three pairs of legs, each with a small claw.

Color

Crawfish can vary in color from brown to green to red. Shrimp are typically gray or brown, but some species can be brightly colored, such as red or blue.

Habitat

Crawfish live in freshwater habitats, such as lakes, rivers, and swamps. Shrimp live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, including oceans, estuaries, and rivers.

Diet

Crawfish are omnivores and will eat a variety of plants and animals, including algae, insects, and small fish. Shrimp are also omnivores, but their diet is mostly made up of algae and small crustaceans.

Lifespan

Crawfish typically live for about 2-3 years. Shrimp can live for up to 5 years, depending on the species.
