Why does pasta turn red when it goes bad?
Pasta doesn't actually turn red when it goes bad. The color change you're probably thinking of is actually a sign of mold growth, which can appear white, green, black, or even pink depending on the type of mold.
Here's why mold grows on pasta:
* Moisture: Pasta, especially cooked pasta, contains moisture, which is ideal for mold growth.
* Starches: Pasta is made from starch, which is a good food source for mold.
* Spores: Mold spores are everywhere in the air, and they can easily land on pasta and start to grow.
While some types of mold may not be harmful, it's best to discard any pasta that shows signs of mold growth as it can cause allergic reactions or stomach upset in some people.
To prevent mold growth on pasta:
* Store pasta properly: Store dry pasta in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Store cooked pasta in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
* Avoid overcooking: Overcooked pasta releases more starch, making it more susceptible to mold.
* Use fresh pasta: Fresh pasta tends to have a shorter shelf life than dried pasta, so use it quickly.
Remember, if you see any mold on your pasta, it's best to throw it away and start fresh.
