How to Cook Spelt Pasta
Spelt is a whole grain that some cooks use as an alternative to wheat, because the two grains have similar tastes and textures. However, spelt contains gluten, so people with a sensitivity to this protein should not use spelt as a substitute for wheat. When cooking spelt pasta, you can use the same technique you use for preparing wheat pasta, and top it with your favorite sauce.
Things You'll Need
- 1 lb. spelt pasta
- Large pot
- 1 to 2 tbsp. sea salt
- Long-handled spoon
- Colander
Instructions
-
Bring 5 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Sprinkle 1 or 2 tbsp. of sea salt to the boiling water to add flavor to the pasta.
-
Place the dried spelt pasta into the water. Bring the water back to a fast boil.
-
Stir the pasta immediately with a long-handled spoon to keep the noodles from sticking to each other.
-
Boil the pasta for 8 to 10 minutes, depending on its thickness. The pasta is done when it is "al dente," or slightly chewy and firm in the center.
-
Drain the pasta in a colander over your sink. Do not rinse the pasta.
