Does undercooked hamburger meat contain e coli?

Undercooked hamburger meat has a high chance of containing Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. E. coli bacteria are often present in the lower intestines of warm-blooded animals, including cattle. During the slaughtering and processing of beef, there is a chance that E. coli can contaminate the meat. If hamburger meat is not thoroughly cooked, meaning it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius), the E. coli bacteria may not be killed, and if consumed, cause foodborne illness. Symptoms of E. coli infection can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
