How to Cook Raw Pork Bratwurst Sausage

Bratwurst is a traditional favorite in Germany, and it is pork that is ground, seasoned and placed in a natural skin casing. Although precooked bratwurst is ready to eat as soon as you have heated the sausage through, you must cook raw pork bratwurst thoroughly to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Preparing bratwurst requires cooking the sausage fully inside without burning the outside. Several easy ways exist for you to cook bratwurst to perfection.

Things You'll Need

  • Skillet with cover
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Water or other liquid
  • Meat thermometer
  • Spray bottle
  • Tongs

Instructions

  1. Pan-fry bratwurst in a skillet. Spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking, and then cook the brats on medium heat for about five minutes. Turn the meat often to prevent scorching. Reduce the heat to medium low and add a small amount of water or other liquids such as apple cider or beer. Cover the pan and cook the bratwurst for 12 minutes or until a meat thermometer poked into the center of the sausage registers 160 F.

  2. Cook raw bratwurst on a grill preheated to medium-low. Grill the brats for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a meat thermometer registers 160 F. Cover the grill to retain the temperature and to prevent flare-ups. If the sausage begins to scorch, spritz the brats lightly with water. Cover the sausage lightly with aluminum foil and let it rest for five to 10 minutes before serving.

  3. Broil bratwurst in a broiler pan in your oven. Preheat the broiler and then place the pan on the center oven rack, 7 to 9 inches below the heat. Turn the meat with tongs every three to four minutes until a meat thermometer registers 160 F, which is usually a total of about 12 minutes.
