Tips on Saving Hot Dog Buns
It's one of the anomalies of grocery shopping -- hot dog buns come 10 to a package, but hot dog buns come in packages of eight or 12. Inevitably, there are hot dog buns left over. Rather than throw them away, save them for later use.
Freeze Them
-
The best way to save hot dog buns for the long term is to freeze them. Whether you bought more than you needed because they were on sale or you don't intend to use them for a while, placing them in the freezer will guarantee that they are ready when you are. Hot dog buns can last up to a year in the freezer.
Refrigerate Them
-
If you have leftover hot dog buns or have a package or two you don't intend to use for a week or more, place them in the refrigerator. A package of hot dog buns left out on the counter or in the pantry can go bad in less than a week, especially if the weather is hot and humid. In the refrigerator, the cooler, dryer air prevents mold from growing for a longer period of time.
Revive Them
-
Hot dog buns that haven't molded but have gotten a little stale can be revived. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprinkle a little water on the buns or rub them with an ice cube. Place the buns on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven for five minutes. Pull the hot dog buns out and let them cool. The buns should be like new.
