What is a chrysalis made of?

Chrysalis is a protective covering in which a caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis to transform into a butterfly or a moth. It is primarily made of a complex protein called silk. Silk is produced by the caterpillar through specialized glands called sericteries, which are located on its mouthparts. The caterpillar secretes the silk in liquid form, which then solidifies and hardens around the caterpillar's body, creating a protective shell-like structure. The composition of the chrysalis varies depending on the species of butterfly or moth, but it typically contains proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, along with other structural materials.
