How big does a chicken run have to be for 15 chickens?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer to how big a chicken run needs to be for 15 chickens. The ideal size depends on several factors:
1. Breed: Some breeds are more active than others. Larger breeds like Rhode Island Reds require more space than smaller breeds like bantams.
2. Lifestyle: If your chickens have free-range access during the day, they need less space in their run. If they're confined to the run, they'll need more room to roam and exercise.
3. Housing: The size of your coop will impact the size of your run. You need enough space in the run for chickens to move around comfortably and not be overcrowded, especially during bad weather.
General Guidelines:
* Minimum: Aim for 4 square feet of space per chicken, so 60 square feet for 15 chickens. This is a bare minimum and only suitable if chickens have access to additional space.
* Recommended: Aim for 10 square feet per chicken, so 150 square feet for 15 chickens. This provides more room for roaming, scratching, and dust bathing.
* Ideal: If you can, aim for even more space, especially if your chickens are confined to the run.
Beyond Square Footage:
* Height: Your run should be at least 6 feet tall to prevent chickens from flying over the fence.
* Shelter: Provide shade and shelter from rain and wind within the run.
* Enrichment: Include features like dust baths, scratching posts, and perches to keep chickens entertained and happy.
* Security: Secure the run with a predator-proof fence to keep out foxes, hawks, and other animals.
Remember: It's always better to err on the side of more space rather than less. Happy chickens are healthier chickens!
