How should I store uncooked chicken?
Here are some tips for storing uncooked chicken safely:
- Refrigerate chicken immediately after purchase. Do not leave it out at room temperature for more than two hours.
- Store chicken in the coldest part of the refrigerator, which is usually the back or bottom shelf.
- Keep raw chicken separate from other foods, especially cooked foods, to prevent cross-contamination.
- Use a covered container or sealable plastic bag to store chicken, to prevent its juices from dripping onto other foods.
- Label the container or bag with the date you purchased the chicken.
- Cook chicken within 2 days if it is fresh, or within 5 days if it has been thawed from frozen.
- If you are not going to cook the chicken within the recommended time frame, freeze it. Uncooked chicken can be frozen for up to 9 months.
