How to Marinate Seitan (5 Steps)
With its chewy, meat-like texture, seitan -- pronounced "say-tan" -- allows you to reduce the amount of meat in your diet without sacrificing flavor. Also called wheat meat, gluten or mock duck, seitan is high in protein and can be used in place of chicken or other meats in many recipes. Seitan takes on the flavor of marinades well, making it a versatile ingredient in any vegetarian kitchen. Seitan can be found in the refrigerated section of many grocery and natural food stores.
Things You'll Need
- One package seitan
- Colander
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Sauce or marinade of your choice
- Medium size bowl with a lid
Instructions
-
Remove seitan from the packaging and drain off any broth in the package. The packaged broth tends to be very salty and may affect the flavor of your marinade.
-
Rinse the seitan in a colander under cool running water to further remove the packaged broth.
-
Cut or tear seitan into bite-size pieces.
-
Place the seitan in a bowl and cover with sauce or marinade of your choice. Cover the bowl and place in refrigerator to marinate for at least an hour and up to two days.
-
Cook marinated seitan according to your recipe.
