How to Make Yogurt From Soy Milk
Yogurt is a healthy snack and a key ingredient in many Middle Eastern and southeast Asian dishes. Soy yogurt provides a vegan, lactose-free alternative to regular yogurt, but it also tends to be more expensive. Fortunately, you can cut costs while gaining all the benefits of soy yogurt by making your own from scratch.
Things You'll Need
- Oven
- 4 cups soy milk
- Cooking thermometer
- 1/2 cup soy or dairy yogurt
- Jar with lid
- Refrigerator
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Warm the soy milk on your stove top to 100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (42 to 45 degrees Celsius). Use a thermometer to measure the temperature, as a precise temperature range is important for growing the yogurt cultures.
-
Add the yogurt to the soy milk, and mix well. Pour the mixture into a jar, and cover it with a lid.
-
Put the jar in the oven for four to six hours. Check the yogurt after four hours. If it is thick and creamy, it is done; if it is runny, put it back in the oven until it thickens. Homemade yogurt will rarely get as thick as the store-bought variety so it may be slightly runnier than you're used to.
-
Once the yogurt is firm, put it in the refrigerator until it is chilled. Flavor it with sugars and jellies if desired.
