How to Choose Sugar Free Ice Cream
Sugar free ice cream is almost as good tasting as regular ice cream thanks to all the new nutritive sweeteners. When choosing a sugar free ice cream, you must learn to read labels, so you are buying an ice cream that is not too high in carbohydrates.
Instructions
-
Learn about carbohydrates. Fifteen grams of carbohydrates is equal to one healthy serving for the individual who must watch sugar intake. When reading labels on ice cream, look for the total carbohydrate in bold print.
-
Check out the sugar alcohol. If the sugar alcohol has more than 5 grams, subtract half the sugar alcohol from the carbohydrate grams to get the true carbohydrate grams. For example, if the sugar alcohol is 6, that is equal to 3. Subtract 3 from the total carbohydrates. If the carbohydrates are 18, then when you subtract 3, the carbohydrates is 15, a good number for the sugar conscious individual.
-
Watch the additives. If the sugar free ice cream has peanut butter cups or chocolate chips added to the ice cream, you have some real sugar. This may not be good for the individual who must stay away from sugar. Stick with plain ice creams such as vanilla or coffee.
-
Look at the serving size. Most ice creams have a serving size of 1/2 cup. The calorie content will range from approximately 70 to 110 calories.
-
Try different brands. Some sugar free ice creams are very sweet tasting. Others have little taste. Experiment until you find the brand that is best tasting for you. Now, enjoy that ice cream.
