How to Make a Sugar Free Vanilla Donut Glaze

Take a great, low- or no-sugar donut recipe and coat it with a sugar-free vanilla glaze for a low-sugar treat. The range of low-calorie sweeteners available makes this possible. Opt to make a yeast-raised donut to pair with this glaze as these require less sugar than cake donuts. Change the flavor of this glaze by using different extracts, but keep the other ingredients the same. Adding nutmeg or cinnamon to the glaze, while optional, increases the sweetness without having to use sugar or more sweetener. This glaze may also be used as a sweet topping for quick breads, muffins or scones.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-cup saucepan
  • ¼ cup water
  • Whisk
  • 2-cup mixing bowl
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ cup powdered milk
  • ½ cup granulated bulk sugar substitute (such as Splenda granular or Equal for Recipes)
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg or cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring the water to a boil in the saucepan.

  2. Stir the cornstarch, powdered milk and sugar substitute in the bowl.

  3. Whisk the boiling water into the ingredients in the bowl for one to two minutes, or until slightly thickened.

  4. Stir the vanilla extract, salt and nutmeg into the glaze until completely incorporated.

  5. Dip the donuts into the vanilla donut glaze or drizzle the glaze over the donuts to coat.
