Can Moscato Be Used to Make Sangria?

A drink with centuries of tradition surrounding it, sangria typically includes wine, fruits and sparkling water. The name "sangria" is thought to come from the Spanish word for blood, and most traditional sangrias pay homage to this by featuring red wine. After this drink made its way from Spain to New York in 1964, mixologists began experimenting with different combinations of ingredients, incorporating sodas, other alcohols and other types of wines, including moscato.

Moscato Merits

  • Made from a white grape that's traditionally grown in Italy's Piedmont region, moscato offers a fruity flavor. In recent years, production of this wine has expanded beyond the Italian borders. It's now produced worldwide, from California to South Africa. This wine is quite sweet and is slightly fizzy. Unlike other wines, which might have a 15 percent alcohol content, moscato contains approximately 5 percent alcohol. With its sweetness, fruity flavor, low alcohol content and fizziness, moscato is an ideal wine for sangria.

Flavorful Fruits

  • When making sangria with moscato, you can choose from a variety of fruits. Complement the wine's natural sweetness by adding sweet, juicy fruits such as peaches and berries. Alternatively, make sangria with exotic fruits such as passion fruit, papaya and mango. Apples and pears give a nice flavor to a moscato sangria. Adding tart citrus fruits, such as grapefruits or oranges, can cut through some of the wine's sweetness.

Additional Alcohols

  • Thanks to moscato's low alcohol content, you can add other alcoholic ingredients without too much worry. The type of alcohol you add should complement the flavor of your fruits. If you've added peaches to the sangria, try using peach liqueur. If you've added apples, pour in a bit of hard apple cider. For sangrias with citrus fruits, a citrus-flavored vodka, such as lemon vodka, makes a nice addition.

Fixing the Fizz

  • Sangria is traditionally effervescent, due to the added sparkling water. While moscato is slightly fizzy, it is not fizzy enough to serve without the addition of a carbonated ingredient. Add sparkling water, a fruit-flavored soda that complements your chosen fruits or ginger ale to give your moscato sangria some fizz.
