How to Make a San Francisco
Two different cocktails bear the name "San Francisco," one a Martini-like drink, blending sweet and dry with a hint of fruity flavor. The other, more of a tropical affair, mixes banana, orange, pineapple and pomegranate flavors over ice. The vermouth-based San Francisco is more suited to a formal or classy affair, while the tropical cocktail works best for a lighter, casual gathering.
Things You'll Need
- Ice
- Cocktail shaker
- Sweet vermouth
- Dry vermouth
- Sloe gin
- Bitters
- Orange bitters
- Martini glass
- Maraschino cherry
- Highball or Collins glass
- Unflavored vodka
- Banana liqueur
- Orange juice
- Pineapple juice (optional)
- Grenadine
- Cocktail stirrer
Sloe Gin San Francisco

Add a scoop of ice or about 5 large ice cubes to a cocktail shaker.

Measure and pour equal parts of sweet vermouth, dry vermouth and sloe gin into the cocktail shaker. It takes roughly 1 shot or 3/4 ounce to make a single San Francisco served in a standard martini glass.

Add 1 dash each of bitters and orange bitters to the cocktail shaker. A dash is an imprecise measurement, usually ranging between 1/6 and 1/8 teaspoon. Some brands of bitters come with a cap to aid in measuring.

Place the cap on the cocktail shaker. Shake until well combined.

Strain the drink into a martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Banana Liqueur San Francisco

Fill a highball or Collins glass about three-fourths full with ice.

Pour about 1 to 2 shots each of unflavored vodka and banana liqueur over the ice. Triple sec can be added, if desired, but use no more than one-fourth the amount of vodka and banana liqueur used.

Fill the glass nearly to the rim with orange juice or a mix of equal parts orange juice and pineapple juice.

Top off the drink with a splash of grenadine up to the rim of the glass. Mix the drink with a cocktail stirrer. Alternatively, pour the grenadine at the side of the glass so it drops to the bottom without mixing. The drink will slowly change colors as you drink it and the grenadine mixes with the rest of the cocktail.
