What is the difference between us and UK pints?
Volume
The main difference between US and UK pints is their volume. A US pint is defined as exactly 473.176 cubic inches (28.875 cubic centimetres), while a UK pint is defined as 20 fluid ounces (568.261 cubic centimetres). This means that a UK pint is about 20% larger than a US pint.
History
The history of the pint is a long and complicated one, dating back to ancient times. However, the modern US and UK pints can be traced back to the 18th century. In 1707, the British Parliament defined the Imperial gallon as 10 pounds of pure water at a temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The gallon was then divided into 8 pints. In 1824, the US Congress adopted the Imperial gallon as the standard unit of volume in the United States. However, the US gallon was later redefined as 231 cubic inches (3.785 litres), which is slightly smaller than the Imperial gallon.
Usage
The US and UK pints are both used to measure liquids, but they are used in different countries. The US pint is used in the United States, while the UK pint is used in the United Kingdom and many other countries that were formerly part of the British Empire.
Conversion
To convert a US pint to a UK pint, you need to multiply the volume in cubic inches by 1.20095. To convert a UK pint to a US pint, you need to multiply the volume in cubic inches by 0.83267.
