Which Liquors Freeze?
The contents of a bottle of vodka in a freezer will become viscous, but it won't ever freeze solid. On the other hand, some other alcoholic beverages will freeze into slush. This might lead you to believe that some liquors don't freeze. In fact, they do, but only at very low temperatures.
The Freezing Point
-
Ethanol freezes at -173.38 Fahrenheit, much lower than the freezing point of water, which is 32 F. Liquor is a mixture of ethanol and water. The freezing point of an alcoholic drink will be between the two; the exact freezing point varies depending on the proportion of alcohol to water in the mixture. For instance, the freezing point of a typical vodka is about -16.5 F, well below the usual freezer temperature of 0 F.
Freezing at Home
-
Liquor with low alcohol content may freeze in a home freezer, but the alcohol level has to be relatively low. In the early stages, the water in the solution will freeze out. This "fractional freezing" most commonly occurs in drinks like beer and cider, and is sometimes used to make high-alcohol winter beers. According to Sauce Magazine, low-alcohol liquors like Malibu coconut rum will freeze in some home freezers.
