How to Infuse Vodka With Jalapenos

Vodka infused with the flavors of fruits, vegetables, spices or herbs adds a complex layer of extra flavor to cocktails, punches and can help liven up recipes for pasta sauces, soups and other foods cooked with liquor. Commercially infused vodkas are convenient, but if you like to do things yourself, infusing vodka at home is simple and requires no special equipment. It may take a few tries to figure out the best timing to get the exact amount of flavor you prefer, so have fun experimenting.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • 1-quart canning jar
  • Lid
  • Coffee filters
  • Funnel
  • Bottle
  • Stopper or lid

Instructions

  1. Wash your jalapenos thoroughly and dry them with paper towels.

  2. Place one to three jalapenos into a clean glass container. The more jalapenos you add, the stronger the flavor will be. One bottle of vodka is usually 750 milliliters, which is a little more than 25 ounces, so you need a container that will hold at least that much liquid and still have room for the jalapenos. A 1-quart canning jar will give you more than enough room.

  3. Pour in a bottle of vodka.

  4. Close the lid tightly and gently shake the container.

  5. Place the glass container in a cool, dark place and let it sit for at least three days. Shake the container very gently once or twice a day.

  6. Taste a bit of the vodka on the third day. If the flavor is not strong enough, shake the container very gently, reseal it and let it sit for another day. Taste the vodka every day until it is flavored to your preference.

  7. Place a clean coffee filter into a funnel. Insert the funnel into the neck of a bottle.

  8. Slowly pour the jalapeno-infused vodka through the coffee filter and into the bottle. Discard the jalapenos.

  9. Seal the bottle tightly and store it in the refrigerator.
