Who invented strawberry jam?

The ancient Romans would mix crushed strawberries with pepper, vinegar and honey. Louis XIV had pots of strawberries cooked with sugar and preserved in silver or pewter. The English loved strawberry jam and strawberry tart was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. The French used strawberries to make syrup, and to flavour tarts and ice cream.
